-l S. qr w' r. 1 f'rwl 'l TM 1 "IP tfc 9 at fc, Top Attraction in Florida The Visitor Information Center offers the public and serves as a terminal for the NASA bus tours an opportunity to view educational exhibits and of the Spaceport. Thousands of tourists have films of the nations space program at no charge, stopped here since its opening. VISITOR CENTER A Million Dollar Mecca 9 Five-year-old Jeffrey Ilowart of Ithaca, N.Y., a youthful visitor to the VIC, described his view of the life size model of an Apollo astronaut as neat.

i I I 1 I I I i i i I 5 I By JEAN BARBER Its one of Americas foremost attractions. And its right in your own back yard. Its the Visitor Information Center at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, and for every man, woman or child who has stopped there it stands as a symbol of Americas progress in space in research and in national pride. The 42-acre center, officially opened this summer, is a million dollar mecca" for citizens of the world.

And few leave the area without greater enthusiasm, understanding and appreciation of American technological efforts. The VIC consists of two buildings connected by a covered portico. One building houses two theaters for the showing of films about the space program, and also contains exhibits and art works. The portico area is a gallery of art, with paintings and drawings showing a variety of apace activities. Also in the portico area are working models depicting in simplified terminology the way gravitational forces are utilized by the worlds scientists and currently a Lunar Orbiter Spacecraft occupies a center space on the patio.

The second structure houses one of the Centers most dramatic exhibits, a scale model of the giant Vehicle Assembly Building with the crawler transporter carrying a Saturn 5 rocket toward the launch pad. Also in the east wing is a refreshment area, a gift shop, i ticket booths for the NASA bus tours, and life size models of astronauts dressed in the space suits actually worn during orbital flights of Mercury and Gemini, and the Apollo NASA and TWA Project Heads at VIC From left, Byron Jackson of TWA and Simon Burttshell of NASA pose before the scale working model of the Vehicle Assembly Building with the giant Saturn 5 Rocket on the crawler. space suit to be worn on the long journey to the moon. An attractive outdoor refreshment area provides a relaxing atmosphere for tourists and overlooks the vast VAB building five miles to the north. Administrative offices are also housed in the east wing with Byron Jackson, representing TWA and Simon Burtschell of NASA in charge of VIC operations.

The Visitors Information Cen ter bids fare to be one of the top tourist attractions in Florida and the nation. Despite the soft sell advertising by government agencies, the Center has attracted visitors from 60 fireign countries, and from ev-ry slate in the union. Surprisingly, however, an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 Brevard residents have yet to visit one of the world's stellar displays and many Floridians still have hazy notions of the area, which is less than a days drive from any part of the state. There is continuing effort on the part of NASA and TWA to publicize Americas space efforts at Cape Kennedy around the nation and the world. And it is hoped by NASA that Florida residents and particularly Brevardians will climb.aboard the band wagon to tell the story of space as it is graphically described at the Visitors Information Centec at the Kenntdy Space Center.
