Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 46 is offering a one-day boating safety course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Endowed Fellowship Fund for environmental sciences graduate students has been started with a $2 1,000 donation. Florida Tech is soliciting additional funds to increase the endowment.

Faculty of the Department of Marine and Environmental Systems will select fellowship recipients, graduate students whose studies focus on water and air quality. Women will especially be encouraged to apply. SOBAC was a nonprofit, citizen-based volunteer organization initially formed in 1999 to question placing the world's largest desalination plant on Tampa Bay Estuary. Brevard County commissioners today will continue discussing how they plan to collect enough money for fire protection and emergency medical services without enraging thousands of homeowners. Commissioners are trying to figure out how to continue to finance the county EMS program after a court ruling invalidated their present method. They have come up with an alternative method that would raise the rates for thousands of lower-income residents and cut taxes for the wealthiest homeowners. Insurance rates and cost of living increases already have made it difficult for people on fixed incomes, residents told commissioners last week. Commissioners are considering exemptions based on income level, potential spending cuts and other funding options.
