I don't 1 know what I'm going to do to meet this," she said. Both Culver and Nolan chose work as aides because they enjoy working with children and wanted to be involved in their children's schools. Both agree the best-educated teachers and aides should teach children. What they don't appreciate is the pressure put on them to become college students. "You have retrain your mind.

It's just hard get back into the to groove," said Culver, an aide at McAuliffe Elementary. She plans to earn an associate's degree, but wedging classes around her 14-year-old daughter's busy schedule and her job is not easy. School officials say they want to help aides meet the new requirements. "Although my goal is for all employees to meet the highly qualified criteria, it is more important to me that no Brevard Public School employee loses his or her job as a result of the new requirements," said Lynn Spadaccini, director of early childhood education and Title I. Originally, she said, the district considered requiring all its paraprofessionals to meet the new IN MEMORIAM In Loving Memory Of Arnold Kopelman "You Are My Sunshine" One Year Ago Today We miss your smile, your laughing eyes, and your heart of Gold.

God selected you, because he needed an Angel to help watch over us all. Love Forever, Fay Dogger, Angel, Roxanne and Isabella standards but decided against it. "Personnel in non-Title I schools will not lose their jobs if they do not meet the new standards," Spadaccini said. Norman, who is a teacher assistant and job coach at Sebastian River High School, has taken nine courses so far. That includes three classes last semester while working full time.

"I don't like things hanging over my head," she said. She sees the educational requirements as an opportunity. "I think I can be more she the classroom," said. She is now taking pre-calculus at the Mueller Campus of IRCC and said she needs to concentrate on that. "I knew math would be demanding because it's been so long since I took math," Norman said.

Fran Adams, assistant superintendent of schools for curriculum and instruction, said the district's goal is to assist its paraprofessionals in meeting the new educational requirements. "We have offered five classes with IRCC, and we are offering three classes now at Sebastian River High School to accommodate them," she said. She said the extra education is a hardship on some. "They could have grandfathered people we already said. David Sullivan, provost of Indian River Community College, said there are 30 paraprofessionals who have formed a "cohort group" that takes classes in the district.

He said 40 other aides are taking courses on campus. He thinks about 30 aides already meet the new requirements. "We have a file on each paraprofessional. The classes are hands-on to learn skills they can use in the classroom right away. These aides are learning new ideas and technologies," he said.

Indian River School Superintendent Roger Dearing said the state hasn't given the district guidelines about what type of curriculum is preferred or what other test will be allowed to check knowledge at a grade 14 level in lieu of more formal coursework. Sullivan expects one outcome of the added educational requirements for aides is that some will continue their education to become certified teachers.
